Dear Wider Horizons Members and Other Friends,

Note that next week’s Monday Morning Memo will be delivered on Tuesday morning, September 24. I’m taking a 3-day jaunt to Salt Lake City (sans computer) to visit my brother Andy! Back Monday late afternoon.

Wider Horizons Events and Information

  1. Welcome our newest member Anne Taylor. See the attached bio for how to contact her.

  2. More than 30 of us gathered for a fabulous picnic yesterday! See the attached video for a glimpse of the fun. Big thanks to those who made it a success: Bob Anderson who worked tirelessly to get us to play the games; Nancy Hooyman who inspired us with her megaphone-enhanced remarks; Debbie Ward with her MCing and bubble machine; other planning committee members, including Nora Langan who could not be present but whose high concept informed the picnic decorations, Susan Adler (beautiful flower arrangements), Susan Jamison, garlands and all around help), Patti Gorman, who with husband Dick Knutson schlepped in spades. Everyone cleaned up! More pictures in our upcoming Newsletter.

  3. Postcarding to Swing States on Tuesday, September 17, 10:30 am. All scribes are welcome, all materials supplied. Oxbow Bakery, 2307 24th Ave East, side streets for parking. Our last postcarding event will be September 24. All are welcome!

Sharing

  1. Nancy Hooyman’s new book, Care Justice: Reframing Public Policy, Elevating Care Work, has just been published by Routledge.  This book expands on critical policy issues salient to care workers – unpaid family caregivers and underpaid home care workers – that Nancy presented at our WH forum last March.  It will stimulate your thinking about what a society characterized by care justice would look like and is timely reading in this election season. It can be ordered via this link Care Justice: Reframing Public Policy, Elevating Care Work - 1st Editi (routledge.com) or through Amazon.

  2. Ann Lawrence recommends this wonderful documentary, premiering soon at SIFF, about a local Hawaiian man who coaches homeless kids to surf, love the ocean, and have confidence in themselves. It also features the devastation of the fire in Lahaina last August, and how that fire resulted in them all becoming homeless…..but supporting one another as never before. "Uncle Bully's Surf Skool" Seattle Premiere (siff.net)

  3. Rick Grossman shared information about “a week without driving” to help us empathize with each other and our fellow Seattle denizens who are unable to drive or can’t afford to drive (attached).

  5. Abacus: A Play about Consciousness and Caregiving: Duane Kelly and Katie Zeitler with Rebecca Crichton, Monday, September 16, 7:30 PM, The Medhi Reading Room, Town Hall Seattle, 1119 8th Avenue, Seattle, $10 – $35 sliding scale

Have a lovely week,
