GiveBIG 2017 Frequently Asked Questions

Nonprofit Organizations

When is GiveBIG?

GiveBIG 2017 will be on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, from midnight to midnight (Pacific Time).

How does the GiveBIG “Stretch Pool” work?

All donations made through Seattle Foundation’s new GiveBIG website, hosted by Kimbia, will receive a percentage of the matching funds (or "stretch") pool. This percentage depends on the size of the stretch pool and how much is raised in total donations on GiveBIG day. In 2014, the stretch pool was $1,000,000 and the total amount of stretch-eligible donations was $12,800,000. The stretch percentage worked out to 8.3% (or approximately 8 cents on the dollar).

Do all donations qualify for GiveBIG "stretch" dollars?

We will "stretch" all donations up to $2,500 per donor, per organization. The reason there is a limit to the amount that qualifies for the stretch pool is to help these funds go further for organizations that rely on smaller donations.

Can any NPO participate in GiveBIG?

If you are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (or have a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor), based in King County, and have completed the GiveBIG registration process, then you are eligible to participate.

What is the size of the Stretch Pool?

We will update all nonprofits of the 2016 GiveBIG “Stretch Pool” closer to the event date. The stretch pool for 2015 was over $1 million, thanks to contributions by generous local companies, individual donors and Seattle Foundation.

Does it cost anything to participate?

There is no cost for nonprofits to participate in GiveBIG. However, online credit card donations for GiveBIG 2016 are subject to a 4.9% per transaction processing fee by our online donations provider and credit card companies for most credit cards. Seattle Foundation does not receive a percentage of gifts for supporting and overseeing GiveBIG and does not receive any payment from credit card transactions. The "stretch" amount will be determined based on the total donation amount, before the processing fee, and donors will receive a tax deduction on the full donation amount.

What is a Golden Ticket?

A Golden Ticket is an opportunity for your nonprofit organization to receive an additional $1,000 on GiveBIG day. Throughout the day on May 3, donors will be chosen at random from the online donations made through to have an additional $1,000 given to the nonprofit that received their donation. Golden Tickets are not part of the stretch pool and are in addition to any portion of the stretch pool an organization receives.

How do Matching Funds work?
Each nonprofit controls the display of their own matching funds. A matching fund is a match, dollar-for- dollar, up to any amount, and the total amount will appear on the GiveBIG website nonprofit profile. The donor will contact their favorite nonprofit directly or work with the Seattle Foundation to submit their match. You will only be able to enter one amount for the matching grant and it will automatically match dollar for dollar at the beginning of the event until all funds are complete. It will not show in the event total in the navigation bar until the match is verified completed by Seattle Foundation.

Do donors have to be fundholders/members of Seattle Foundation to participate in GiveBIG?

No. Anyone with an internet connection and a credit card can make a donation on GiveBIG day. You do not need to register on our website to make a donation.

How do I stay informed about GiveBIG?

The best way to keep up to date on GiveBIG is to subscribe to our new blog. We'll post the latest news and information about the online giving event and stretch pool, as well as tips, messages, helpful links and reminders. Read and subscribe by going to the Seattle Foundation website.

Making Donations

Will donors receive an auto receipt at the time they make the online contribution? Will they receive notification later?

An email acknowledgement that is a valid tax receipt will be sent automatically when a donation is completed, so you should not send them a tax receipt for their gift.

What methods of payment are accepted?

Donations made by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) via Kimbia through Seattle Foundation's website will qualify for the stretch pool. Because they cannot be tracked through our website, donations in other forms will not count toward the totals for the stretch dollars.
