Wider Horizons Events and Information

1.     Thursday morning’s Member and Friends Zoom led by Sue Lerner (October 13 at 9:30 am) will be held as usual. Sue will send out the Zoom link and a reminder on Wednesday.

2.     Our Book Club meets tomorrow, Tuesday, October 11 at 10:30. The book to be discussed is Vinegar Girl by Ann Tyler. Sandra Wheeler will lead the discussion, with Nancy Robb facilitating. Please join us to participate (if you’ve read the book) or just listen.

3.     Eleanor Dills and Ann Lawrence will meet folks at the Arboretum Visitors Center for a walk in the Arboretum on Friday October 14th (11 am).  We will head out along the paved access road, heading south, then return along Azalea Way.  People are also welcome to ‘wander at will’!

4.     The SOLO Ager’s Group with our social worker Janet Salsbury is on Monday, October 17, 1:30-3:00, at the Capitol Hill Library, 425 Harvard Ave. East. 5.     Registration for our next Forum Gun Violence in America: A Preventable Problem, which includes Kay Beisse as one of the two presenters, has been robust. Let me know if you want to sign up and I’ll send you the Zoom link for the Forum, Sunday, October 23, at 3 pm.

  1. Our friend Mort Kondracke is one of the panelists on a Folio-sponsored Forum on Tuesday, October 18, 7-8:30 pm that sounds so exciting we are cancelling our Tuesday evening all-member Zoom so you can attend it. Mort says about this pre-election preview: We’ll do more than just talk about various races, covering voter suppression efforts and what’s being done to counter them. See the attachment for more about this event and one other that Mort recommends.
  2. Naomi Shiff has alerted us to the Hardy Plant Society Bulb sale at the Center for Urban Horticulture. It’s on Sunday, October 16, from 10 am – 2 pm. If you are going and can give a ride or need a ride, let me know. See the attachment for more information.

  4. Tom Heller recommends a book How you can become a “persuader” by Anand Giridharadas. The author will speakat Town Hall on October 26: https://townhallseattle.org/event/anand-giridharadas-with-naomi-ishisaka/ This book, like our One Small Step initiative, offers an antidote to the toxic divisiveness of political groups.
  5. Nancy Hooyman shared some interesting upcoming offerings of the University of Washington Retiree Association. See the attachment.
  6. From our friend Carli Hoki of the NW Universal Design Council comes information about an Age Friendly conference on November 5. See the attached flyer. 
  7. Our colleagues at a village in Bethesda Maryland have invited us to attend a webinar on palliative care on Sunday, October 16. See the attached flyer for how to register.
